About the InFLAMES Flagship Programme

The InFLAMES Flagship represents a cutting-edge research and innovation cluster funded by the Research Council of Finland. As a collaborative effort between Åbo Akademi University and the University of Turku, InFLAMES brings together elite experts from research, technology, and industry sectors with the unified goal of developing advanced therapies and diagnostic tools. The programme is strategically designed to integrate immunological and immunology-related research activities, with the ultimate aim of creating new diagnostic and therapeutic tools for personalized medicine.

Visiting professors play a crucial role within this ecosystem, strengthening international networks and facilitating knowledge transfer from leading global institutions to the flagship initiative. The appointment of visiting professors represents an intentional effort to enrich the research environment with diverse perspectives and specialized expertise from around the world.

My Role and Contribution

As part of this appointment, I will be bringing our laboratory's latest developments in bioimaging AI for biomedical research to the Turku academic community. This collaboration presents an excellent opportunity to apply our technological innovations in super-resolution microscopy and artificial intelligence to immunology research, potentially opening new avenues for understanding inflammation at the cellular and molecular levels. At Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier (ITQB NOVA) in Portugal, my research group has been exploring host-pathogen interactions through pioneering work in super-resolution microscopy, developing imaging technologies that reveal cellular and viral structures with extremely-detailed resolution. Our team combines state-of-the-art microscopy with artificial intelligence and computational biophysics to create innovative tools for decoding cellular mechanisms at the nanoscale.

The appointment aligns perfectly with our commitment to open science and technology dissemination. Throughout my career, I have spearheaded the development of widely adopted open-source tools that empower researchers worldwide to advance life sciences research. This philosophy of accessible technology dovetails with InFLAMES' mission to create an innovation ecosystem that can broadly impact healthcare through personalized medicine approaches.
