Visiting Professor at InFLAMES

I have joined the InFLAMES Flagship Programme as a Visiting Professor, bringing our work in bioimaging and artificial intelligence to a group of immunologists.

About the InFLAMES Flagship Programme

InFLAMES is a research and innovation cluster funded by the Research Council of Finland, run jointly by Åbo Akademi University and the University of Turku. It draws on research, technology and industry to develop therapies and diagnostic tools, and brings immunology research together with the aim of building new diagnostics and treatments for personalised medicine.

Visiting professors strengthen the programme's international networks and carry methods and experience in from other institutions.

My Role and Contribution

I will bring our laboratory's recent work in bioimaging AI to the Turku community, applying super-resolution microscopy and artificial intelligence to immunology, and to how inflammation works at the cellular and molecular level. At Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier (ITQB NOVA) in Portugal, my group studies host-pathogen interactions, building imaging methods that resolve cellular and viral structures in fine detail. We combine microscopy with artificial intelligence and computational biophysics to read cellular mechanisms at the nanoscale.

The appointment fits our work on open science. Over my career I have led the development of open-source tools now used widely in the life sciences, and InFLAMES aims to build an innovation ecosystem for personalised medicine on the same principle of accessible technology.
