Recognition in "Mapping ERC Frontier Research - Artificial Intelligence" report

Our ERC Consolidator project, SelfDriving4DSR, has been prominently featured in the "Mapping ERC Frontier Research - Artificial Intelligence" report by the European Research Council (ERC).

The report analyses the ERC's portfolio of projects that develop, use or study artificial intelligence (AI), and describes how ERC-funded curiosity-driven research shapes policy for human-centric and trustworthy AI in the EU [1].

SelfDriving4DSR appears in the Physical Sciences and Engineering section. The report sets out our aim of combining computational optical microscopy with machine learning to build self-driving microscopes that adapt in real time to what they are observing.

The microscope adjusts its own imaging parameters, which makes 4D live-cell nanoscopic imaging possible over long periods and brings cellular events into view that were previously missed, such as the progression of viral infection. The report also notes our work on the open-source ZeroCostDL4Mic platform, which provides deep learning networks, pre-trained models and microscopy datasets.

We are glad to see the work recognised by the ERC.
