Spring Break University by Oeiras Valley at ITQB NOVA
On April 15, 2025, our researchers Mariana G Ferreira and Mario Del Rosario participated in an outreach activity under the scope of the Câmara Municipal de Oeiras educational project "Universidade de Primavera" (Spring Break University). This program aims to help teenagers explore their vocational interests through diverse hands-on experiences and assist them with their career choices.
Hands-on Science Experience
Students spent their morning visiting ITQB NOVA where they could experience becoming scientists for a day. Under the guidance of our researchers, the students observed their own cells under microscopes and explored cutting-edge technology for bioplastics. This immersive experience at ITQB NOVA allowed students to see science in action, sparking curiosity and potentially inspiring future scientific careers.
The "Universidade de Primavera" program provides a unique opportunity for young students to engage with different fields of knowledge during their school break, helping them make more informed decisions about their academic and professional futures. Our lab's participation reinforces our commitment to scientific outreach and education in the Oeiras community.
Impact and Engagement
The students' feedback was positive, and several came away interested in biological research and microscopy. Giving them time at the bench shows what research work is actually like.
These programmes matter most for young people deciding what to study next. We plan to keep taking part.
