Science Outreach at Escola Básica de São Julião da Barra
Science should not stay inside the laboratory. We present our work at ITQB, and we also take it out to schools, to students who would otherwise never see it up close.
On March 27, 2025, our researchers Filipa Reinoite and Mario Del Rosario visited Escola Básica de São Julião da Barra in Oeiras.
Bringing Science to Life
They ran demonstrations that put abstract ideas in the students' hands, from simple microscopy exercises to colourful chemical reactions.
The students could put questions directly to working scientists, which is the part that tends to shift how they picture the job.
Creating Future Scientists
Early contact with science builds scientific literacy and widens who takes up STEM. Meeting scientists from a range of backgrounds makes a scientific career look like something students can actually do.
