Science Outreach at Escola Básica de São Julião da Barra
We believe that science should not be confined to laboratory walls. While sharing discoveries within our institute at ITQB is always exciting, magic happens when we bring science directly to the community, especially to those who might not otherwise have the chance to experience it up close.
On March 27, 2025, our researchers, Filipa Reinoite and Mario Del Rosario, visited Escola Básica de São Julião da Barra in Oeiras as part of our ongoing commitment to science outreach. Their goal? To spark curiosity and inspire the next generation of scientists.
Bringing Science to Life
During their visit, our researchers conducted interactive demonstrations that transformed abstract scientific concepts into engaging, tangible experiences for the students. From simple microscopy exercises to colorful chemical reactions, the activities were designed to capture young imaginations and encourage critical thinking.
The students had the opportunity to ask questions directly to working scientists, demystifying the scientific profession and helping them envision themselves in similar roles. This personal connection is often what transforms a passing interest into a lifelong passion for science.
Creating Future Scientists
These outreach activities align with our belief that early exposure to science is crucial for developing scientific literacy and encouraging more diverse participation in STEM fields. By meeting scientists from different backgrounds and seeing science as something accessible and exciting, students are more likely to consider scientific careers.
We are proud to be part of a broader movement that brings science into schools, encourages hands-on exploration, and helps shape the scientists of tomorrow. Together, we can build a more scientifically literate and inspired society, one classroom at a time.
